Meeting Background
The rapid advancement of AI technology is reshaping the field of higher education, transforming teaching, learning, and research activities, and having a "disruptive" impact in the post-pandemic era. To responsibly and safely use AI and generative AI technologies in education, International Centre for Higher Education Innovation under the auspices of UNESCO (UNESCO-ICHEI) and the 2024 International Institute of Online Education (IIOE) rotating presidency unit, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, will hold a National Policy Dialogue on July 18 in Abuja, Nigeria. The theme of this conference is "Building a Consensus Framework for the AI Era: Developing a Higher Education Policy Roadmap for Nigeria". It focuses on policy/guidelines formulation, infrastructure development, professional development for teachers, and educational equity and inclusion. The aim is to assist decision-makers, educators, learners, and researchers in better leveraging the advantages of AI technology to empower the digital transformation of higher education.

Dr. Olatunbosun Tijani is the current Nigerian Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy. He is recognized for his leadership in the tech and innovation sectors in Africa. Tijani played a pivotal role in expanding the reach of Co-Creation Hub (CcHUB), a leading African technology innovation center. In 2019, he managed CcHUB's acquisition of Kenya's iHub and led the establishment of the CcHUB Design Lab in Kigali, Rwanda. His efforts have significantly contributed to fostering innovation and technology-driven solutions across Africa.Besides his entrepreneurial achievements, Tijani is also an academic. He was the Director-General of the Nigerian Law School from 2005 to 2013, during which he implemented significant reforms. Following this, he became the Vice Chancellor of Baze University, Abuja. In politics, he has been an influential figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), serving in various capacities, including as a member of the party’s National Caretaker Committee representing the Northeast. Mamman holds several honorary titles, including Dan Ruwata of the Adamawa Emirate and Dokajin Mubi of Adamawa State.

Maiayaki's career at the NUC spans over 30 years, where he has contributed significantly to educational planning, policy formulation, and the internationalization of Nigerian universities. He has held various leadership roles, including coordinating major projects such as the World Bank's education initiatives and the NYSC Presidential Honours Scholarship Scheme. His extensive involvement in education policy and administration has made him a key figure in the advancement of Nigeria's higher education system.

Prof. Kabir Bala is a professional Builder and renowned professor of Construction Management. He is the 15th Vice Chancellor of ABU Zaria. Professor Kabir Bala graduated with B.Sc. (Hons) in 1985 from the Department of Building, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. He worked briefly at Amana Development Company in Kaduna before joining the services of ABU, at the Department of Building in 1987. He obtained the Master of Science in Building Services in 1990, Masters in Business Administration in 1998, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Construction Management in 2001, all from Ahmadu Bello University.

Prof. LIANG Jiansheng, the Executive Deputy Director of UNESCO-ICHEI, is currently a Professor in the Department of Biology at the School of Life Sciences, Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech), where he also serves as a PhD supervisor and the Secretary of the School of Life Sciences. He previously held positions as the Dean and Secretary of the College of Bioscience and Biotechnology at Yangzhou University, and as the Director of the Academic Affairs Office at Yangzhou University. Since joining SUSTech in 2012, he has served as the Director of the Teaching Affairs Office and as the Deputy Director of the Human Resources Department (acting). He has also served as the Director of the National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Biosciences, the Leader of the Ministry of Education's Innovation Experimental Zone for Bioscience Talent Training Models, a member of the Ministry of Education's Bioscience Teaching Guidance Committee, and a Guangdong Provincial Supervisor. He has been recognized as a High-Level Overseas Talent by Shenzhen and is a recipient of the State Council's special government allowance for experts. |
