In the rapidly evolving wave of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technology, the education sector is undergoing profound transformation. How to integrate AI into teaching and administration to enhance learning efficiency and improve education quality has become a core topic of interest for educators worldwide. To explore these possibilities, UNESCO-ICHEI, in collaboration with Prof. Gerd Kortemeyer from ETH Zurich, will host a webinar titled “AI-enhanced Teaching and Learning - Best Practice at ETH Zurich”, uncovering the potential of AI to empower education.

This webinar will focus on Ethel, an innovative AI infrastructure designed specifically for education. Ethel offers diverse functionalities, including providing feedback on assignments, assisting with grading, supporting programming tasks, and fostering interactive learning through exercises and research. Its standout feature lies in its seamless integration with course materials such as lecture scripts, exercises, PowerPoint presentations, and reference materials, delivering highly customized and context-aware support tailored to different courses.

Ethel has already been successfully piloted in six courses at ETH Zurich, covering mathematics, physics, and computer science, with participation from 1,500 students. By leveraging AI-powered interactive tools, automated grading, and personalized feedback, it has not only enhanced the learning experience but also improved the efficiency and quality of the teaching process.

The webinar will also address a critical question: how can educators balance the use of local infrastructure and commercial cloud services to achieve optimal customization, scalability, and data security? Additionally, it will explore the potential of AI in fostering conceptual understanding, problem-solving skills, and open-ended assignments, while emphasizing the importance of retaining core competencies such as manual problem-solving and conceptual thinking alongside technological innovation.
