Memorandum of Understanding Signed between UNESCO and the Shenzhen Government
On the afternoon of May 23, 2015, the Deputy Mayor of Shenzhen, WU Yihuan, and the UNESCO Assistant Secretary General for Education, TANG Qian, signed the Funds-in-Trust Framework Agreement on behalf of both parties, which was witnessed by the Vice Minister of the Ministry of Education, HAO Ping. The Secretary General of Plenary Session of UNESCO, DU Yue, as well as the Party Committee Secretary of SUSTech and director of the leading team for the UNESCO Category II Project, LI Ming, attended the signing ceremony.

According to the agreement, the Shenzhen Municipal Government will support the work of UNESCO and implement higher education programs in Asia and Africa approved by both parties. This is the result of deepened cooperation after the Memorandum of Understanding was signed by the Shenzhen Municipal Government and UNESCO, making itself an active undertaking for Shenzhen to serve the "OBOR" strategy.Dr. HAO Ping praised the successful signing of the agreement, saying that the Ministry of Education supported the mission to establish a UNESCO Category II Centre in Shenzhen, and that Shenzhen and SUSTech were welcome to contribute to the internationalization of Chinese education.At the signing ceremony, Ms. WU Yihuan introduced the achievements and challenges of the innovation-driven development of Shenzhen in recent years as well as the ideas and measures adopted for the accelerating forward lead of the development of higher education in Shenzhen. She expressed her wish to expand the existing communication and cooperation mechanism with UNESCO in order to boost the construction of a modern, international, and innovative Shenzhen.TANG Qian appreciated the development achievement of Shenzhen and supported Shenzhen to apply for the establishment of a UNESCO Category II Centre and to host international conferences.LI Ming thanked UNESCO, the Ministry of Education, and the Shenzhen Municipal Government for supporting SUSTech's application to establish a UNESCO Category II Centre, assuring those attending that SUSTech would adopt various measures to meet the requirements of establishing the Centre.
