On September 22, 2021, UNESCO-ICHEI and ASEAN University Network (AUN) Secretariat formally signed the "Memorandum of Understanding" to advance the cooperation in the digital transformation of higher education in ASEAN countries and the empowerment of teachers with digital skills.
AUN was established in 1995 with the signing of its Charter by the Ministers responsible for higher education from six ASEAN Member Countriess. AUN aims to facilitate academic exchanges, knowledge sharing and joint research for ASEAN higher education institutes by providing capacity building for education professionals and promote internal and external cooperation for ASEAN universities.
After establishing cooperation with Southeast Asia Education Ministers Organization (SEAMEO), this signing of MOU paves the way for on-ground cooperation of UNESCO-ICHEI and AUN to engage more ASEAN higher education institutes to enhance the capacity building and institutional governance for digital transformation of higher education, and develop quality regional partnerships.
Dr. Choltis Dhirathiti, AUN Executive Director, expressed his great expectations for the tangible cooperation with UNESCO-ICHEI such as smart classroom, teacher trainings, educational applications of artificial intelligence and other cutting-edge technologies. He specifically pointed out "The current global pandemic has brought many changes, but it somehow accelerated the process of HEIs in adapting their teaching and learning by using ICT. Under this background, our collaboration with UNESCO-ICHEI is very exciting."
Prof. Dr. Li Ming, Director UNESCO-ICHEI, held a strong confidence of this partnership and highlighted "The cooperation between AUN and UNESCO-ICHEI will be based on “joint contribution and shared benefit" that we will jointly mobilize resources to build bridges between universities in Southeast Asia, so that more universities in the region can keep up with technology development and updates and better serves for their mandates on quality talent cultivation with digital competency and skills.
